1991: Marc Quinn, "Self"
In the spirit of the so-called "Pathetic Aesthetic" emerging in the late 1980s and early 1990s, Quinn's "Self" is more peripheral to that vibe, with more profound objectives rather than to simply use shock as a way to poke viewers into feeling something or to simply recoil from it.
"Self" is a frozen sculpture of the artist's head made from 4.5 litres of his own blood, taken from his body over a period of 5 years....Described by Quinn as a 'frozen moment on lifesupport', the work is carefully maintained in a refrigeration unit, reminding the viewer of the fragility of existence.
