1962: Influence of Blues

In the early 1960s, American recordings were making their way to Europe, and British musicians were collecting them, and being hugely influenced by them. Blues really had no direct influence on visual art, unlike jazz, pop and classical, but they were essential to the zeitgeist in pop music that was happening at that time, that may have also indirectly influenced pop artists.

The Rolling Stone's Bill Wyman: “I first heard the blues when I went to the first rehearsals at the beginning of the Stones in December ’62...Brian Jones had a few records, and Mick had a few like Bo Diddley and Chuck Berry..." [Why music gives Bill Wyman the blues]

The Beatles were inspired by some of the same influences, and in 1962-1965 did a BBC radio show titled "Pop Go The Beatles" performing songs by Little Richard and Carl Perkins (albeit more of a Country & Western influence), but both were a fascination with American culture.
